Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was established in the late 20th century. With the great efforts of several generations of thoracic and cardiac professionals in the past decades, it achieves spectacular development. At present, there are more than 9,000 professionals of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in China. In 1983, under the guidance and initiatives of the older generation of experts on thoracic and cardiac surgery like Professor Huang Jiasi, Wu Yingkai, Lan Xichun, Gu kaishi and etc., a preparatory group of Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was set up. In December 1984, as a branch of Chinese Medical Association, Study Group for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was formally established.? Under the approval of Chinese Medical Association and Chinese Association For Science and Technology, Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery finally came to existence on the basis of original study group In August 1985. Professor Su Hongxi, a renowned expert in cardiovascular surgery and director of cardiac surgery department at the General Hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, was then elected the first chairman for the Society. He was also the second consecutive elected chairman in 1988. In 1992, Professor Sun Yanqing, another well-known expert in cardiovascular surgery, was elected as the third Chairman, who was the president of Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Affiliate of Capital University of Medical Sciences at that time. Professor Zhu Xiaodong, who is a famous expert in cardiovascular surgery and was the president of Fuwai Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences at that time, was elected as the forth chairman in 1996 and later as the fifth consecutive chairman in 2002. In the early 2006, Professor Hu Shengshou, a noted specialist in cardiovascular surgery, was elected as the chairman of sixth.

Since the first day when it was established, Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery played an important and active role in the promotion of intercommunication and academic development of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. A nationwide conference of thoracic and cardiac Surgery is held every four years by the Society. It becomes the most authoritative and influential professional academic event receiving increasingly widespread attention. In October 1985, the first national academic conference of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Chinese Medical Association was held in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. It was the first pageant of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and received 586 manuscripts. In August 1988, the second national conference of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was held in Xi'an of Shanxi Province, which received more than 1,340 manuscripts. In May 1992, the third meeting was held in Beijing with a total of 1179 manuscripts received. The Fourth National Conference of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was also held in Beijing in May 1996. In August 2002, the Fifth National Conference of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, which was the largest convention since the establishment of the Society. A total of over 1,470 colleagues of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery came to attend it and the convention received 1669 manuscripts. The Sixth National Conference of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was held in November 2006 at the Beijing International Conference Center, which received a total of more than 1,300 manuscripts. In January 2006, a decision was made by the Committee of Sixth Session of Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, which changed the conference held once every four years to that held annually. Then the Society decided to open the seventh conference of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in November 2007.

By organizing over 10 international academic conferences, Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery also play an active role in promoting international cooperation and communication. The Committee of Sixth Session of Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery made a decision that the international professional academic cooperation and communication should be further strengthen and expanded. International cooperation would be enhanced in the future.

Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery has also play an important part in the promotion of the professional education in the country. The Society held various professional courses for several times annually, which were all warmly welcomed by the young doctors.

"Chinese Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery", founded by Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, has been published in 23 volumes. It makes a great contribution to the professional communication and development of the discipline.
